CREAKING STUMPS
Yekaterinburg 2018
Once upon a time, the entire world order was governed by the laws of nature, and people believed in the spirits of the wind, water, thunder, and lightning—both in Scandinavia and in Ancient Rus. The "Creaking Stumps" playground is inspired by Scandinavian mythology and its imagery of forest spirits, as well as by Russian fairy tales featuring personified nature: here you will find Moomin trolls, benevolent leshys, tree-people, and swamp dwellers…
The playground is divided into four zones: "The Windfall," featuring a climbing structure made of logs and ropes that is an exact replica of a forest windfall. "Stump Glade," the central play zone, which resembles an open forest clearing with snags, stumps, and tree roots. The "Sandy Kingdom," an inclusive play area where children of all physical abilities can dig and find peace playing with sand. And the "Stone Glade," a zone for the youngest visitors, featuring elements that mimic the shapes of miniature mountain ranges.
The main guardians of the playground are the giant stumps, embodying the wise old elders of Russian fairy-tale forest lore.
The "Big Stump" is an 8-meter-tall tower with an observation deck at the top and multi-level vertical net labyrinths inside, which lead to a slide, a tunnel, and the observation deck itself, nestled right in the stump’s "hair." The "Small Stump" is its grandson—a shorter tower, up to 4.5 meters high, packed with climbing ropes, climbing walls, and even a relaxation podium with leaf-shaped benches.
Area: 500 m² includes: 18 play structures, impact-absorbing surfaces, and landscape elements.
